ASHFIELD 95 FIRST TEAM
Saturday 24th February 2001
Borrowash Victoria....1 Ashfield 95....1 (HT 1-1)

TEAM...Cresswell, Edmonds, Williams, Poyser, Burton, Walker (Chambers 72), Bottomore, Waring, Allen, Powers, Scott. SUBS NOT USED..Wood, Barsby.

Ashfield 95 came away from Borrowash with an hard earned point on Saturday. Ashfield had to make changes to their line up due to Injuries and work commitments, leading scorer Neil Poyser was switched to a sweeper role. Borrowash dominated the opening 1/2 hour and were unfortuanate not to have opened the scoring. Borrowash struck the post and also had strong claims for a penalty turned down when Darren Edmonds who was on the goal line appeared to handle a goalbound shot but the referee waved play on. When Borrowash did open the scoring on 35 it was from a Poyser mistake, caught in possession when the last man, the Borrwash striker robbed him of the ball and fired past Cresswell.
Ashfield drew level with their first real effort on 39mins, Steven Walker firing in a cross from the left flank which the Borrowash keeper couldnt hold,
leaving a simple tap in for Mark Burton.
The second half was a lot better from Ashfields point of view, they looked more solid at the back and seemed to have a lot more shape. Borrowash did strike the bar with free kick on 78 mins, but Ashfield could have stole all 3 points on 85 when substitute Chambers had a glorious chance saved by the home keeper. Chamber also came close on 90mins with a 20 yard affort. Ashfield will look to build on their second half performance for next weeks challange cup Quarter final against Matlock.

Tuesday 20th February 2001
Heanor Town Res....2 Ashfield 95....1 (HT 1-0)

TEAM...Cresswell, Edmonds, Wright, Lee, Burton, Powers, Bottomore, Waring, Allen (Wood 78), Poyser, Scott. SUBS NOT USED..Chambers, Walker.

Ashfield 95 will feel a little disappointed not to take anything from their visit to Huckanll Town on Tuesday evening, especially as both goals were very scrappy and fortuanate on Hucknalls part. The start of the game saw Ashfield in control striking the woodwork on two occassions with Poyser hitting the bar and Bottomore striking a post, Poyser also forced a good saw from the home keeper. Hucknall always looked sharp in attack with there midfield quick to support there forwards. Hucknall hadn't created any real clear cut chances before they went into the lead on 35 when a long shot of no danger took a wicked deflection and wrong footed Ashfield keeper Cresswell. The second half was only 5 minutes old when Burton forced home Ashfields equiliser following a mix up in the Hucknall defence. The game then turned into a midfield battle until Hucknall fired the winner on 78 minutes from a nothing really cross, that was cleared straight to an Hucknall player who scuffed his shot into the ground from close range but somehow it managed to bounce over Cresswell.

Saturday 10th February 2001
Derby Rolls Royce....2 Ashfield 95....3 (HT 2-2)

TEAM...Cresswell, Edmonds, Williams,Woodward, Burton, Powers, Bottomore (Scott 75), Waring, Allen, Poyser, Howard. SUBS NOT USED..Chambers, Walker.

Ashfield earned three points on their travels on Saturday with a 3-2 success at Derby Rolls Royce. In difficult condions due to an heavy pitch and blustery conditions it was Ashfield who made all the early running having a couple of chances and a goal disallowed, before Poyser broke clear to fire Ashfield into the lead on 15 minutes. That goal seemed to wake up Derby Rolls Royce and a dubious decision on 32 minutes brought them level...following a shot off the bar which came down under Cresswells crossbar and saw the Rolls Royce striker fail to make any contact on the ball and resulting with the ball in Cresswells hands, the striker was in the back of the net, the referee somehow judged the ball to have crossed the line. This seemed to rattle Ashfield and on 37 mintes they slipped behind when a cross from the left was converted on the back post with an easy finish. Ashfield got to grips with the game and Howard levelled things on 42 minutes going past the last defender and the goalkeeper before finishing. The second half Ashfield played their best football of the game against the blustery wind and on 65 minutes a Burton right flank cross caused mayhem in the Rolls Royce box allowing Jimmy Bottomore to fire home from close range. Derby Rolls Royce pressed for an equaliser without creating any clear cut chances against Ashfields organised back line, in fact it was Howard who came closest to adding a fourth for Ashfield on 82 but saw his shot saved.

Ashfield 95....1 Swanwick....2 (HT 1-1)

TEAM...Cresswell, Edmonds, Williams(Walker 88), Sheldon, Burton, Powers, Bottomore, Waring, Allen, Poyser, Howard. SUBS NOT USED..Chambers, Scott.

Ashfield 95 suffered a disapointing home loss on Saturday agains strugglers Swanwick. It was more disapointing that Swanwick's winner came in th 93rd minute. Ashfield had taken the lead on 12 minutes when Darren Howrad got onto a Mickey Allen through ball before firing into the bottom corner giving the visiting keeper no chance. Ashfield seemed to sit back after taking the lead and were punished on 32 minutes when Swanwick using the long ball forced a scramble in the box before it fell nice for there striker to fire home from close range. Ashfield dominated the second half but failed to convert any of the numerous chances that were created for Poyser and Howard. Swanwick never really threatened and looked happy to settle for a draw. Although they did always look dangerous from set pieces trying to use there height advantage at every oppurtunity. It was in the 93rd minute when Ashfield gave away a needless free kick in the left corner which resulted in the winner, an header on the back post, Swanwick had thrown up all their big defenders to snatch 3 points

Saturday 27th January 2001
Matlock Utd....1 Ashfield 95....1 (HT 0-1)

TEAM...Bowler, Edmonds, Woodward, Sheldon, Burton, Powers, Bottomore, Waring, Allen, Poyser, Howard. SUBS NOT USED..Chambers, Scott, Walker.

Ashfield 95 recordered a 1-1 draw away at Matlock on Saturday, but will look back on missed first half chances which should have put the game out of Matlocks reach. Before Ashfield did manage to break the deadlock on 35mins, Howard had struck the woodwork on two occassions. It was captain Matt Waring who got the goal heading home an Howard corner on the back post. The first 15 minutes of the second half was Matlocks best spell and they were rewarded on 58mins when somehow a Matlock midfielder bundled past about 4 ashfield players on the edge of the box before sliding past Bowler. Ashfield pressed hard in the muddy conditions to restore their lead but in the end had to settle for a point.

Wednesday 24th January 2001
Staveley...2 Ashfield 95...3 (HT 0-3)

TEAM...Bowler, Edmonds, Williams, Lee, Burton, Powers, Waring, Allen, Bottomore(Sheldon 74), Poyser, Mercer(Wright 88)..Sub not used,Cresswell.

Ashfield 95 earned an impressive 3-2 away success at Staveley on Wednesday evening. In an hectic opening it was Ashfield who took the lead on 27mins when a sweeping move saw Gary Mercer cross for Neil Poyser to cooly finsh. It wasn't long before Micky Allen doubled the lead on 33mins with a cracking 25 yard volley. Poyser added the third on 38 mins robbing the last defender and firing past the advancing keeper. The second half Ashfield seemed in full control with Mercer and Poyser both having chances to put the game out of Staveley's reach.
Ashfields back three of Edmonds, Lee and Williams were always in charge until on 70 mins when Staveley pulled one back from nothing, a 25 yard shot giving Bowler no chance.Staveley sensed hope and gave Ashfield a nervous finish when a bullet header from an inswinging free kick on 81 mins again left Bowler no chance..but Ashfield held out without further scare to collect the points

Ashfield fielded a much changed side from Saturday due to work commitments but did field former Eastwood Town player Gary Mercer who has signed for cover and will play when available due to his commitments to present club North Notts.....But all was in vain as the referee brought an early end to proceedings after 38 minutes when the pitch was more like an ice rink, with
the score at the time locked at 0-0, Ashfields Gary Mercer
having the only shot on target during the play.
